Getting late, I didn't manage to get hold of Warner Bros unfortunately which is a shame. Although I am currently in contact with the BBC who have also linked me to advertising agency http://www.leoburnett.co.uk/ Leo Burnett. I've been assured i will hear back from them early this week which although being quite late, i will hopefully have my live client sorted soon.

BBC understand that i need to get my brief soon and told me that they had a brief for me which included making a short animation to put on their website about the BBC's qualities if it got down to the point where i had run out of time, furthermore they are still waiting to hear back from Leo Burnett and people in the BBC working on Dr Who who could possibly give me a more exciting task.

My idea is to create a short story following the life and death of a boy who develops Cancer through his twitter account. I want the video to begin normally with the potential of being an advertisement for anything, then as it continues, becoming hard hitting, with a message to donate to Cancer Research. I want to show his tweets as he posts them, developing from his first tweet with 0 followers, to finally his death when he has thousands of followers, the end will read 'Don't just follow. Donate." I chose Twitter as the platform of my advertisement as it is very current in the world right now, and used by many people to blog their lives acting like an auto biography, I thought this would be interesting to view from the point of view of a Cancer patient. I also chose the soundtrack based on what is current, which is one of Ed Sheeran's lesser known songs, Firefly. I plan on using a mixture of 3DS, After Effects and Premiere to complete this task.

I've received great feedback from those who have watched my Cancer Research advert. Although i have quite a few things i would have done different looking back on things. Overall i think the idea and song choice were good, Twitter as the theme, and Ed Sheeran as the soundtrack which are both very current in the Internet and Music industry.
I think i got my point across nicely, i was afraid people would get bored of reading but from feedback i seemed to have successfully caught a balance between being too soppy, sad and boring, and keeping people interested with early on tweets showing his growth on the networking site.
I don't like how After Effects exported some of the shots (mainly the picture showing the followers/following/tweets growing, as it was stretched and distorted making it look tacky. I don't like having the black border and don't know why it didn't stretch to 1080p when that's what i said it to be.
I also would have done something differently about the 'blackouts' which were meant to show a gap in time where no tweeting occurred. And i noticed an error in my work when i asked 'how can i tweet this in 140 characters, when i should of written letters.

My work was also going to be shown on the BBC but they couldn't due to the football related tweet which referred to Spurs players as 'Yids' which would be thought of as derogative. Although they asked me if i were to change it, they would consider putting it forward.

Overall i think it had a good base, and a good message. Feedback was much better than expected, with quite a few tears. I think it could do with a bit of polishing just to make it more professional.

I enjoyed the project as it gave me a chance to put something out there which could hopefully convince people to donate.

I would like to dedicate this work to my Auntie Lenia Hadjisavvas who passed away of Cancer during the period of this project.

Apologies folks for the late update, hasn't been the best week for me. Going to be updating quite a bit over the weekend though with regards to my virtual client project, and ideas for my research project. Anyways, to give you a quick update on what i've been doing in terms of the simulated client, i've come up with an idea for a Cancer Research advert which revolves around Twitter, being very current at the moment, meaning a large target audience will be able to relate to it, whether they know somebody with Cancer or not.

My previous idea was having the a saturated world in orbit, slow motion, with slow piano music setting the mood. Having black molecules falling from the Earth and creating facts and numbers in the sky. The more and more facts coming from the earth, the less and less saturated the World would become, until eventually it turned black and white as the camera zooms closer into the molecules creating the Cancer facts to discover they are in fact people falling from the Earth. After talking to Andy about this, we agreed it was quite complex, a little boring and samey as people don't like just seeing facts and numbers thrown at them, and being a 3 week project, i needed to think of something simpler and more effective and original.

Once i settled with the Twitter idea, i started following the Cancer Research UK on twitter, https://twitter.com/#!/CR_UK

I came up with the idea to focus on the whole 'Follow' button on peoples Twitters, perhaps at the end having it fade into a 'Donate',
with a clever slogan such as,

"Do more than just follow them, Save them." (as the follow button fades into a 'donate')

Other lines i've brainstormed include

"Just following someone won't cure them, Donate and make a difference."
"Do more than follow. Lead."
"Do more than follow. Donate."
"If only there was a Donate button"
"How many of your followers have been diagnosed with Cancer?"
"A Cancer victim doesn't care about how many followers they have."
"Following someone won't cure their breast Cancer"

and edited them to incorporate twitter, just to make the advert a bit less boring and samey to all the other facts and number throwing adverts.

Originally planned on just having the twitter feed website being the whole of the advert, but changed it and decided to be slightly zoomed out from a MacBook Pro screen, from a MacBook Pro i will create in 3DS Max. The reason for this is to use the lighting to display the changes in night and day, to show the development of time, which will be in time lapse.

In few words, my idea is mainly someone on twitter, popular and tweeting everyday, gaining followers, retweets, until he suddenly stops tweeting, after a couple days people begin to tweet him wondering where he is, (at this point the viewers not necessarily knowing it's an advert for cancer research) Eventually Cancer Research's twitter will start popping up on the screen, firstly saying '@person123 won't be tweeting again anytime soon', ' @person123 was diagnosed with (type) Cancer at 19. '@person123 had 456 followers' '456 donations could have saved him'. Followed by the chosen quote i will use from above.

This may not be the exact words i use. I want to get as much done by Sunday. As i'm going home Monday/Tuesday for a serious family matter and won't be back until Friday.

500 Word Rational LIMBO

We were asked to interpret a script in our own way and create a 3 minute animation displaying this interpretation. I chose the Dojo scene from the matrix and decided on a storyline based around a dying old man. The animation takes part in his mind, a subconscious battle between his 'inner demon' to determine whether he wakes up from his 'sleep' or dies, hence the title, Limbo. The quotes from this matrix scene tie in nicely to my story as when Morpheus is referring to 'the matrix', in my scene, he will be referring to the virtual reality inside the mind. To show the contrast between the dream world and reality, I displayed the battle in his mind in a Japanese style cartoon, whilst everything outside the mind was a lot more realistic.
About three quarters of the way through this project, i clicked with 3DS max in terms of modelling, texturing, and rigging, which is a shame because at this point i looked back and there would have been a couple things i would have changed or re done. Although i found the first part of this project straightforward, little did i know i would hit a brick wall when it came to the envelopes, after spending a long time on the skin mesh and bones, i found it very difficult sorting out the envelopes, i spent what felt like weeks trying to master enveloping my character in a way where he would be able to bend in any position i wanted, and once i edited one characters envelopes i couldn’t figure out a way to copy them over to my other character which has near enough the same body. This resulted in one character being able to move more than the other, but it also restricted me from pushing the boundaries in my animation in terms of movement. Lip synching is fun, next time i plan on spending more time creating a varied choice of morphers though as i found myself quite limited.
Something i’ve realised is you don’t usually realise something is a problem until you see the finished project. When playing around in 3DS max, certain fight scenes, to be more specific, the punches looked much more realistic, then i found looking back on my final piece, the movement is very static and i should have done a lot more with the feet. Though i found i’ve learnt more from this project than i have from all the previous ones combined, so i’m glad of this learning curve.
In terms of compositing, i created a heart monitor in After Effects, which i was going to place in the hospital room, but disgarded it later as it looked out of place and tacky, although i have been working on a few external projects with after effects, involving lightsabers.
Overall i’m fairly happy with the outcome, there is much room for improvement. I think i had a unique spin on the scene, which allowed me to play around with two different sets of materials, although due to the simplicity and stylistic scenes, i didn’t manage to use my map library i created last term. I’m happy with my characters, i need to get better at making my characters movements fluid, but that’s down to practise with editing envelopes, and knowing what different aspects to spend certain amount of time on.

BIG COD fan, Infinity Ward all the way, although Treyarch did bring some interesting things to the table with Black Ops with Wager Matches, Zombies. 2 Player Online, Recording Games, but aside from that i thought the online gameplay itself took a step backwards.
Anyways, that matters not, as this game is coming out in November, which is guaranteed to be immense. [300]

Fighting

A couple fight scenes i found on youtube i thought made good use of the rigs. This is the kind of fighting i wanted to have in my animation, the video made it look easy lets just put it that way. Rigging my characters was easy, and i definitely feel i've gotten to grips with the whole 3DS max system, i'm pretty confident in modelling, lighting, texturing and rigging, my actual animation on the other hand, i feel needs improvement, i had a lot of ideas in my head i couldn't get across, and i either did worse versions or them ideas, or had to scrap them totally. I had in my head that if i spent FOREVER rigging, getting EVERYTHING perfect, that my character would be like an action figure in my hand to merely mold at my will, this was not the case! Little did i know that ENVELOPES would be my demise. My characters skin lacks smoothness in some of the complex moves i was planning on having him doing, i went back a couple times to alter them, and spending nearly 4 days looking at youtube envelope tutorials and just playing around with the envelopes to see what type of overlaps worked best involved in little improvement, i didn't even bother spending that same amount of time on my other character.

Animating a fight scene is HARD, one of the many things i've learnt from this project. and it's not even gravity, or how fast things move to make the movement look realistic, it's the fact i couldn't seem to get my character into the right positions i wanted him. I guess it's practise, and i think when i merged the files something happened to the elbow and knee helpers and they just decided to not do their job anymore, thus some scenes joints are going backwards! it's been challanging no doubt, but i thoroughly enjoyed the challange...at most times.

Lip Synching Trickery

Lip synching didn't quite work out the same way as it did when practising with Andy's pre made model, which i managed to master eventually by the way! no no, for some reason my old man vertices caused me trouble in trying to create some shapes, so i resorted to about 6 or 7 simple mouth movements rather than PAH FAH DAH RAH GAH LA MA DADA. Ya get me? Either way i don't think it came out too bad.

Hospital Scene

This is the kind of style i wanted to go for when desiging my room, originally i wanted it to be very moodly lit, dark, lonely yet clean. I originally used wood materials and had a bedside table with flowers but it made the scene look too 'homey' so i changed everything to white and mint, giving a type of eery feel.

TIME ZONE:
2020, the near future, i chose this due to the colours matching. and after modelling my character, finding a suitable 'wrinkly skin' materal mix took A LONG time, and the closest thing i found made him look shiny and kind of like a frog or alien in some lights, i will let the audience interpret that how they want to! Frogman or Alien, he's still an Old frog man or old alien!

My Idea - Matrix Dojo Scene - LIMBO

We were asked to take a 3 minute clip from a film, and turn it into an animation by interpreting it in our own way and add our own little twist to it. I decided to choose the matrix dojo scene as it sounded most exciting to me, and had a mixture of action packed scenes, smart slow motion 'matrix' shots, and an oppertunity to make an interesting Environment. In a way i felt as though i had to prove myself after my last project, although I didn't think the outcome of my Bots & Bananas was necesarilly bad, it lacked show of movement due to my character not completely being rigged due to some problems, and having such a simple environment.

I thought i could do something interesting with the Matrix dojo scene and my first thoughts were "what could the characters be?" Animals were the obvious choice, so i decided to stay away from that idea, monsters/aliens were the next, which could prove to be interesting, spartans; too obvious for an andrew georgiades project, as were superheroes. Then it hit me, an interesting fight scene between OLD MEN. Something you don't see everyday. Obviously this was eaiser said than done, being many possible flaws to an old man fight scene as old men are slow, frail and old. Then as i youtubed videos inspiration drew from the Yoda/Dooku & Yoda/Sidious fight scene online, both old men, both flipping, swinging, bouncing around.

With this initial thought in mind i began drawing old men, a lot of old men! tall short skinny fat big small etc, originally i had planned to make my main character short, but when i began practise rigs i noticed their would not be enough flexibility. so i decided to go with the tall skinny frail looking man, glasses, walking stick. And i didn't want him to be a normal looking old man, i wanted to go with a kind of characeture type, stylised man rather than necessarily looking perfectly human.

I felt that my idea needed more than just too old men fighting, so after thinking long and hard i came up with the idea were i would have an old man in a hospital bed, dying, and the fight takes place in his mind, as limbo to determine whether he would live or die. This tied in well with the quotes used in the matrix scene when morpheus says "i'm trying to save you, but i can only show you the door you have to walk through it" and "you think that my muscles determine my strength or speed, in this place? you think thats air you're breaking?"

As began drawing up my first draft timeline, i was originally going to have everything in the hospital scene as colour, and everything in the fight in sepia to show the difference, but after all, most of the animation would take place in the dojo, i thought it would be boring to have sepia through it all, in change, i decided to show the contrast by having the hospital in real life to be really bright white, pastel colours like mints and to be in 3D, whilst everything in the mind to be in a styleised comic book/japanese cartoon type animation.

Glass, Light, Water & Explosions

I was working on creating glass objects, some with water inside of them, and creating a realistic shadows and light as the my omni passed through them. On my still images, this worked. Which, when rendered as a still, worked pretty well...

PROBLEM.
I then tried making an animation in which the omni light moves through the scene, changing the shadows/lighting, whilst also adding in a 'bomb' space warp geometric deformable to blow up my name, in plans to put it into after effects, add motion blur (i attempted to add motion blur to the 'environment' in 3ds max but did not work as planned) and rewind to look like my name was being formed out of glass. In attempting this, i recieved an error code saying

RCGI 0.5 error 361053: no photons stored after emitting 1000000 photons from light "mr Area Omni01|Light" (tag b25): canceling emission job
RCGI 0.5 warn 362004: no photons stored after emitting 10000 photons from light "mr Area Omni01|Light" (tag b25)

which THEN caused the render to take away the realistic light/shadow effects and replace them with blog shadows.

I then attempted to re-open the project and start again, then stupidly when asked whether to save the project before closing i clicked yes!

Lip Synching Speech Test

I was going to practise lip synching to Ne-Yo - So Sick (Acapella) which i downloaded, but unfortunatly 3ds Max wouldn't allow me to import the music file, so practised with the given voice clip instead. After rendering i realised my main mistake with the lip synching was the word 'TIME', more specifically the M, which i never had my character completely close his mouth the pronounce, and which i later realised when i looked in the mirror, you HAVE to close your mouth the pronounce the letter M! I was going to correct my mistake but as this was only a test i will just keep it in mind when lip synching the character from my project.
In terms of facial features i think i had the eyebrows moving too much, but i think the fact i added some sinister expressions near the end as his voice slows down worked quite well. Overall a good test which i definetly learned from.

Completed my edit in Premiere, and have rendered a few versions now, one in 1080p one in 720p, part of my sequence cuts to a black screen for about 3 seconds for some reason with no explanation, so Premiere is in the process of rendering another edit, hopefully this one is different now i've modified the codec.

Or i'm a good director, either way, i've somehow managed to make the best of a bad situation and mould my retardbot to walk straight and disguise his deformities. Obviously the movement is not as sleak, smooth or realistic as i would have hoped with a completely rigged and working robot, but i'm onto rendering my final scene, which apparantly has 24 minutes remaining, then i can get started on the premiere editing.
Can Andrew Georgiades pull an Andrew Georgiades and whip this bad boy into shape before his deadline tomorrow? DUNLOP BOUT ANDY H.

Here's me thinking that there was a problem with the arms and legs of my robot due to me scaling objects in an obscure way. After realising the rendering for my scene wouldn't take that long, I spent most of today creating the scene, and re creating and re rigging my robot, only to find out the same thing has happened again, the arms and legs distort when I attempt to move them.
The picture displays me rotating his arm at a normal angle yet the arm has spazed across the screen, I don't think i have a bugged version of 3DS as i downloaded it from the autodesk website as a student. I have no idea what has caused this but it has set me back yet another night and the deadline is upon me. Once again i have been on the brink of having enough time to complete my project, and then having it snatched from beneath my very nose. Right now i HATE 3DS max, why does it keep screwing me over? I've googled this problem and haven't found of any similar occurances. Usually i'm a positive human, but wow this has angered me. I feel it's a waste as my good idea is just going to go to waste on a poorly constructed animation as i don't have time to find out a solution to this program and create the robot again, i'm going to have to make do with this retardbot and animate with what i have. This will not work well as the look my robot was going for was powerful, serious and souless, which adds to the comical effect when a seemingly indistructable being breaks so simply. Now my animation is going to contain a handicapped robot walking around like some kind of chump.

Right theres nothing more i can do on this tonight, I just get more angry at myself, and at 3DS max, and at the whole situation staying awake. 9:00am tomorrow i'm waking up to go into uni and hopefully andy can make some sense of this.

Still up working on my project, alarm set tomorrow for 9am. I've decided tomorrow i'm reconstructing my robots arms and legs, creating them completely identical to the ones he has now, but due to many problems i've had, which have caused me to firstly have to manually control the robots movements without the help of rigging, but have also highly limited the positions i can place my robot in, so in order to produce a decent portray of slapstick comedy for thursday, I NEED to have a robot who is flexible and can move to my every whim and command.

I've done a couple test renders, things have run very smoothly and fast due to the amount of shadow, and low usage of background and materials in my scene, this should hopefully buy me some time tomorrow, i'll keep you guys posted, i'm done with anymore 3D work for tonight, but i'm going to put my JPEGs into Premiere and have a little mess about before I make the most of my slumber. I'll keep ypou sfinlfndkn...wow, actually falling asleep at the laptop. Goodnight.

Of Bots & Bananas. Spent about 7 hours in Waverley attempting to fix the problems of my robot. I've made some design errors to my bot without realising which have come back to haunt me, in order to completely rig and have the robot working I would probably have to re-create my robot which is obviously a no no at this point. DETERMINED, to produce something of worthwhile quality on thursday.

I'm going to continue to work non stop, after posting this blog, so you'll probably here little from me until thursday. NEED to get this complete. Improbable, but not impossible, i'm not going to give up. yet.

I've had my bot created, materials and whatnot added for about a week now, and have been attempting to rig it up but coming across MANY problems, as our deadline is coming to a close and i want to leave a couple of days for rendering, TOMORROW is a vital day if i plan on getting this in by the deadline at a decent quality! So i'm going to see Andy tomorrow and can hopefully get some help from him in rigging, then once that's all done and dusted, i'll get to work on creating and rendering my scenes, so hopefully by tomorrow night (sunday the 5th) i will be able to start renderi...and oh shit just as i'm typing this i realised tomorrow is a sunday and will uni even be open? SHIT. right ok as usual I have only myself to blame for not giving myself enough time to do this properly.

I have some amazing ideas an i hope i can achieve them over the next couple of days and get this robot to work!

Also the left side of the robot seems to be working better than the right, which is completely out of sync and basically doesn't work, i'm going crazy here seriously, crazy.

3ds max has turned on me. I struggled for while attempting to get the camera work all nice and smooth, only to find that after a certain amount of frames/time the camera just stops on my spline and doesn't continue to go anymore! i tried everything! extending the time, changing the amount of frames! nothing works! so now for about the 5th time, 3ds has been the cause of me being set behind schedule! i now have less that two days to get my act together and things aint looking good! cos it seems im going to have to perform yet another render after this one! in the meantime it's going to be difficult to finish editing my moving image on premiere/after effects, and completing my visual essay in photoshop and premiere in the meantime as i don't want to risk crashing! God help me. Jules, if you're reading this, show sympathy and understand my pain!

been up since 6:30am, and what a beautiful morning in Nottingham it is, i sit here drinking my tea, gazing out my window, smelling the summer wind as it gracefully flutters, and rendering is still in process! passed half way now, so i should be able to do work in a bit, don't want to risk opening up any major programs such as adobe photoshop or premiere just incase it crashes again.

Going to try and make this time usefull and spend it making sure i'm prepared what else i need to include in my visual essay, so that when i can use my laptop again i won't be dilly dallying. also i should probably get a disc and plastic wallet for the presentation...

I had a lot of fun using 3DS Max for the first time, although at times it was frustrating, once i'd gotten used to it things started to move a lot quicker and easier. I didn't have many problems modelling, although i found smaller objects such as helmets, chairs and tables a lot more difficult and time consuming than the bigger objects that could be easily copied and used again. Some of what was produced was by accident, messing around with the program sometimes rewarded me with something that looked amazingly cool. I had a bit of trouble with the material editor, some JPEGS seemed to be missing from the materials causing them not to come out how i would have wanted. Lighting was pretty basic and straightforward, the main problem i came across was the camera and rendering, being a complex lair, it was difficult to get the camera to do exactly what i wanted flying around my enviroment. infact i'm still doing the cameras as we speak, it is also rendering as we speak. I decided to do the camera one scene/shot at a time to make it easier, although this was probably the longer option, not wise considering i have minimal time left and it's hard to use the computer to do other work whilst all processing power is going towards 3ds max. I of course learnt this the hard way, when my first rendering crashed my computer half way through the render as i had photoshop, premiere, word and firefox all open at the same time!

MY CONCEPT.
at first i had two ideas, firstly buzz lightyear came to mind, then i thought i would create my own superhero and villain. i discarded the buzz idea when i realised i wanted to go for a darker and less cartoony approach, it was also the first time i was using 3ds max so i didn't want to be going too crazy with colours and lights etc. Then i realised theres many great superheroes and villains out there in which you rarely get to see their bases. I figured most people would go for the obvious Batcave, Superman's Fortress of Solitude etc and i wanted to pick a less all star character and build his lair in my own mind. being a big marvel fan the thought of Magneto crossed my mind. A man who controls all things metal. I imagined a base made of pure metal and floating objects. I wanted to make it simple in design but complex in quantity. I named the base 'House of M' after the populer comic book arc in which magneto rules the marvel universe. As i was having problems with materials, which were vital in the sleek metal i intended for the base, i decided to shroud a lot of his base in shadows. at first this black and white lair look fairly colourless, but i didn't want rainbows of colour blooming across. I then took the colour i associate with magneto; a reddy purple, and introduced minimal gloomy lighting to give a bit of life to my creation. i then created a 'Cerebro' type sphere and had the lighting glow in a deep blue colour, giving the whole feel of magnetism and energy. I had silver spheres floating around his lair, a floating purple globe to show his interest in world domination. i found their wasn't much to include in his main house, and that most of my creation was outdoors and exterior lair. inside i had a supercomputer which hang from the walls, his desk and chair and a picture of his enemies, the superheroes and xmen. I wanted some parts of the complex to be incomplete, giving the idea that Magneto created his lair, and builds it as he goes, if he needs floor, he'll make floor, this is why some parts of the lair begin to disentegrate as they move further away. I'm gonna have to get back to you on completing this project as everything is being rendered as we speak, but here are a couple screenshots:

THE MARVEL QUIZ

I've never been a fan of flash, it's my least favourite of the three pathways, but i actually had fun with my quiz. I'm definetly happy with how it turned out, i kept things simple, a simple idea, a simple quiz and i think it worked. I chose marvel as it's universal and would appeal to a large audience. Although my target audience would probably be male, starting from a any age a boy falls in love with spiderman and ending with the age an old comic book fan looks back on his past love. I'm not a flash animation wizard so i thought i'd stay clear from some major animations, but i learnt how to put a fading effect to good use which kept the quiz simple but then turned it into an interactive quiz rather than what could of been a powerpoint project. I didn't spend too mucht time on buttons and fancy clicks and flashing lights but focused on the design of the quiz itself and what causes a quiz to be populer. Now when i'm playing a game i want to feel like i'm not only trying to complete the game, but to complete it to a high standard and also to progress as i further into it. Now my quiz was pretty repetetive, questions after questions, i worried the audiences would get bored, so i came up with the idea that they would progress through the game and the further you go, the more characters you would unlock to have questions about. I purposly put spiderman questions near the end of the quiz as he's probably the most populer character and it would cause users to want to play on just so they can reach questions on him, similarly, if they had another character they favoured, they would be motivated to keep playing so that they could reach that particuler character or group.
The wanted everything to be designed in a comic book styled theme, which is why all the pictures used are hand drawn or sketched and not created via computer art etc, i followed this theme with the fonts and colours i used. I also added video clips, music clips and bonus rounds to keep the audiences enticed in the game.

Ok, you got me, i titled a post 'slackin', and then actually did nothing about the slack that i was slackering about! i've been an absolute chump in terms of updating this but i mean some feedback from the fans would cause some motivation yknow!
anyways enough of that, i'm here now and that's what matters.

right, my previous post. looking forward to three movies. Iron Man 2 was amaazing, lived up to my expectations and CGI was definetly up to scratch. Clash of the Titans however, dare i say was kinda poor. Now i'm greek, and i know we're almighty and all, but this film was no 300. the storyline was non existant, the depth was nowhere to be seen, the cgi was good, but the fight scenes weren't that exciting, i found myself leaning back into my chair waiting for them to end rather than on the edge of my seat wishing i could join them in battle. a definate dissapointment, perhaps because it was a 12 rated movie? i mean cumon if you're going to make an epic greek mythology movie you gotta expect to get a little dirty in the process. forced into the boundaries of a kids movie caused this to be nothing more than a mere myth.

haven't seen prince of persia yet though, Empire only gave it 3 stars so i'm not expecting much, despite the fact i'm a BIG fan of the trilogy game: sands of time, warrier within and two thrones.

i see the light? probably wondering why that's the title of this post. well my fellow do-gooders, outside my window it is hot and sunnny and blue skied and paradise, and i'm stuck inside doing work, i mean end of year work should be in for winter! when we WANT to be outside! well anyways, i have about 5 days until my presentation and visual essay need to be in so i better get cracking.

Ok guys, wow. firstly, apologies for the neglecting of my blog for a while now. I REALLY have been SLACKIN'! Just a quick post to let you know i'm still here! and haven't forgotton about my life as a multimedia student!
I'm going to come back an do a more detailed view on everything we may have missed out on. but at the moment i'm gonna say. 3DSMAX. WOW. NIIIICE program, simpler to use than i thought it would be, but nevertheless still very complex! I'm going to be honest and say I haven't yet completed my 3D Enviroment but i'm working on it and i just want to get it right! screenshots will be coming up soon. When you get told you're going to be designing a superhero base you just flip out, i mean i went CRAZY i love superheroes, i love comics, i read them all the time (not a nerd.) and i was gobsmackered as i had all these amazing ideas but didn't know how to put them into the program. my first thoughts where "OMG AHH THIS GIANT THING THERE AND THIS COMPUTER THING HERE AND THAT THING FLOATING INTO THIS THING WHICH MORPHS INTO A PLAN FROM A SECRET UNDERGROU...STOP ANDREW!" way too ahead of myself. i needed to think simple, it was my first 3D enviroment and i was not some kinda pro who has the ability to play God. (although soon i will be!)
anyways my first design ideas were. BUZZ LIGHTYEAR OF STAR COMMAND!
and that would have been good. but also hard. but also soo good. but then i thought if i'm going to do something i've got to do it right, and didn't know if i was good enough at the program to pull off the whole space craft with lights flashing, computer screens, sci fi scene just yet. well that was my incredible ORIGINAL idea noone else would do out the window. I then thought, who's a really cool supervillain who could have an interesting lair. and then it hit me. MAGNETO. the main villain from the X-Men. we don't usually see his lair. but you can imagine it to be sleek, metal, floating and extremely cool looking! anyways theres some ideas for thought i'll put screenshots up soon!

Flash. oh how i have(not) missed thee.
i can be honest with you right? not really enjoying this project so far, i've got my ideas down on paper, about to begin photoshopping every screenshot to then put into flash. but i'm not really liking it so far.
I'm doing F.R.I.E.N.D.S quiz.
EITHER you pick a character at the beginning, and it asks you questions about that character. or just a general quiz with "who said what" lines "what comes next after this scene" etc etc. i'll also get some screenshots of that up as soon as they're ready!

Woah it's been a while folks! So long i've decided to miss you bad boys! (bad boys being my hardcore fans out there ever-eager to be there when i've posted new posts and quoted new quotes and andyed more andrews. Ok, wow it's early.

Quick recap. Christmas? AMAZING. being the multimedia student I am i got an iPhone. Love it. New Years? Annihilated. Was planning on doing some freelance over the holidays, turns out i'd been scheduled to work a lot more than hoped! But i have been thinking Multimedia! Went to see Sherlock Holmes, and loved it, humour, action, and Rachel McAdams DO all work together! BUT more importantly, the (WILL WIN)OSCAR WINNING film of the year AVATAR (3D) BLOODY AMAZING. firstly by the fact I was a kid again, such a simple storyline, Pocahontas-like. Yet all they needed in a storyline was simple, predictable. The CGI, wow, Lord Of The Rings, 300, Sin City. You chumps better buck the f**k up your ideas for The Hobbit, 300...2? and Sin City 2, because BOYYY AVATAR just changed a lot of shit down in here! a 3 hour long film that was a breeeeze to sit through, it was an experience. Visually Stunning, I especially like the floating waterfalls/mountains. and EVERYTHING shot at the glow in the dark night. and the 3D just made it all that much better! I was thinking they might over do it but they got it spot on! Empire and Total Film give it *****
Oh and also screw us, i wanna be a blue guy!

Looking forward to seeing how other films compete this year. Clash of the Titans, Percy Jackson and the Lighning Thief. (just throwing two out there...that are Greek...cos i'm Greek!) Kick Ass & The Karate Kid looking pretty good too! with Nicolas Cage and Jackie Chan.

First assignment is BLOWING MY MIND. It's literally like a dream assignment, i LOVE superheroes, Comics and all that business. I wanna make this piece IMMENSE, but right now whats in my mind just isn't transferring to what i'm capable of on 3DS MAX. Gotta simple it down a bit maybe? change of idea...everythings still in the works and experimentation. Unlike Adobe which i have in the comfort of my own home, i don't own 3DS so could be a little harder, planning on having a whole day of it tomorrow though!

So our lectures got some new ladies! was thinking where they been hiding? two other courses, Theatre Design...and Film and Television? have joined us in our lectures, LOVE how they use smart words, but that's just cos they're girls, not because they're ACTUALLY smarter. (woah i hope girls don't read this blog) Anyways I reckon i have a lot to learn as last lecture we talked about good ol Stanisvlaski, a jolly fellow i thought i heard the last of in Drama A level last year! But don't get me wrong, these courses are a lot similar then i'd thought! take an aspect such as lighting for example, we ALL use lighting and it's all vital, but we use it in different ways. WE (films) always have lighting, even in a scene that apparantly has no light! whilst in theatre they don't need to ALWAYS have lighting, we can also use natural light, while they tend to be inside, and their lighting normall sets the mood or scene, so colours are used, making it more surreal.

After talking to other Multimedia Associates, K to the Mizzle Kalenn Marshall, and B-Boy Boris Utimizsovskisovs! i learnt they had similar feelings to myself!

Anyways, prepare for the reguler updates again, and posts of my work as it's being done. Peace.

this is all a question of time, i'm getting started on my essay today, and only once i've finished it will i attempt to film my second pixalation. i've written out a storyboard, costume, lighting, effects, colour and sound have all been written out (i will photocopy and put on this blog) hopefully i will be able to film it but it depends on how far i've gotten with my essay which is top of my list at the moment.

Please wait for it to completely load. for some reason it takes forever loading and if you start too soon it'll freeze and won't work right.

i had problems with my gaussian blur effect, it became too complex making the blur part of the layer, the best way to do it was to add a blur into the actionscript but i wasn't advanced enough to be capable of this. instead i made the characters glow, a little more tacky and less proffesional looking, but it would do.

i came across a few error codes, if i remember rightly one being #1009 which came up alot, apparantly this was due to my buttons being in 'movie' whatever that even means?! so after going through all my movies and changing them to 'graphic' everything was fixed.

anyways heres what i got...

Progress, Interactive Narrative

So i've taken all my pictures, edited everything on Photoshop, and created all my buttons. i definetly deserved that break from Flash, using a program i was familiar with. now it's back to Flash to link everything together.
I had some problems yesterday working on it in the blurring side of my buttons (basically each character in the picture would act as a button, and when hovering over a button i wanted the rest of the picture to blur out) now this did not go to plan at first as the gaussianed blurred image (which was set to 'over' part in the button) covered the whole picture, meaning it would activate the blur wherever your mouse was pointing and not specifically on the character. having not using flash before i began to panic, i didn't want to do something simple but it was a risk as i wasn't an expert in flash. after consulting Boris, Multimedia student, web designer and flash expert! he told me that by simply filling in the part you want to act as where the button will be recognised in another section of the button it would work. and BADABING. it worked. but i then came across another problem where due to the fact i was adding more characters in as buttons, it meant that the gaussian blur would only affect the first layer of the photo, not including any buttons on top of it! dear dear me i need this problem sorted out!

Adobe Flash is a pain in my backside, after spending hours on photoshop creating new layers and inmporting them in psd. format to Flash, creating my own buttons, adding effects and transitions a nice little message decided to rudely interrupt my flow of good work!

It reads:

a crash report has been generated...etc etc

then after this, it has the cheek, the nerve, no no...the AUDACITY. to ask me to fill in a 'detailed description' of what happened!?

Another Late Night In The Studio

4am. That's what time I was up to last night giving my One Shot Short Film a re-edit. It was worth it, with added sound effects, music, colour manipulation and editing, I am noticing an improvement. Even managed to go black and white yet keep the red blood.

One Shot Film.
Not much you can do with a film that can only include one shot? You're probably right, which is why we wanted to think long and hard about a unique idea which hasn't been done before, something which could perhaps push the boundaries and limitations of a One Shot Short.
We decided a short had to keep the audiences on their feet, interested and engaged. Which is why we decided to make ours a Thriller. Our aim was to make the audience wish to bring the audience into our story as much as possible, and to succesfully scare the hell outa them! We all had plenty of individual ideas, some more crazy than others, and some...some just involving alot of beating up an innocent Andrew with a baseball bat *cough* Peri *cough*
We thought the best thing to do was to go our seperate ways, think up stories, and then present them to the group the following day.
FLASH FORWARD to filming.
turns out our ideas all centered around a similar theme. Set in someplace dark, creepy, deserted and gloomy, with scared teenagers, allowing the audiences to perhaps relate. (our target audience would be teenagers)
We drove to a deserted forest to film (and when i say deserted forest i mean Car Park, that when shot at a certain angle could perhaps look like a deserted forest)
Lighting; Car headlights, perfect, they would act as a spotlight, showing the audiences only what they wanted to see, and leaving the outskirts and border of the video in shadowed darkness.

Weren't we lucky, it was, excuse my language, PISSING it down with rain. I'm talking each drop was about the size of my head. As uncompfortable as we were, in the back of my minds we knew it was worth it as it would give our thriller even more of a gloomy feel.

and boy was that the longest 2 minutes of my life. Well, all you see is two minutes, but infact we were there for about 2 hours, ideas developing, changing, car moving, CAR BATTERY RUNNING OUT. It was looking nice though, we got wet, but atleast we got a One Shot Movie out of it!

Well this is when things start to go downhill.
Heres a lovely picture of our ta...what's that black stuff coming out the side of it you ask? that's our film, ripped, scrunched and totally destroyed.

We would have to refilm, but this is the kind of things that happen sometimes. Only my mouth swelled up, my wisdom teeth got infected and was on strong painkillers and anti-biotics that night, Oh and not knowing the tape would break I decided to book a train home on Thursday to suprise my Mum on her birthday. In between all this we NEEDED to refilm.
I soldiered through the pain and we managed to refilm the next day. Do i think it was a success? Comparing it to the original, the lighting and sound was 100% better, BUT the video itself, the acting, was not as realistic, looking back on the video now I'm not sure whether audience will be frightened watching this. Perhaps a refilm if we have time?

ROBERT BOWLING! This man is a legend. Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward and lead designer of Call Of Duty 4, and the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 game. Not only do i love his games, but I am also fascinated by the way this man has revolutionised online gaming and FPS (first person shooters) He is an absolute genius. With multiplayer online COD4 he mastered high paced action between up to 18 players, smooth and polished gameplay and high standard graphics. Modern Warfare 2 came out only last week, and without a doubt did not fail to impress.

Speaking of Games, i think it's vital to mention Assassin's Creed 2 and Uncharted 2. The realism of the gameplay in these two games are second to none, especially when playing Uncharted 2, it actually feels like your character is an actor in a movie and you're watching a blockbuster action adventure film.

'The One' did some interesting animation shorts based on the Call of Duty Modern Warfare games. I think it's interesting how all the music and sound effects used in this animation are taken from the gameplay and interesting how he brought these still images to life. He uses a unique style which is eye grabbing and interesting and gives the feel that you are reading an interactive comic book.

AV/Film
Frank Miller, the Comic Book writer of now producer of well known blockbuster's 300 and Sin City succesfully created Comic to Movie adaptations with use of highly stylised special effects and CGI. Firstly Sin City, was the first movie of it's kind having a black and white movie with specific items in a high contrasted colour which was the trademark style of the original comic book. Later on the CGI of '300' wowed audiences and was completely filmed using blue screen technology.

Short Films

Right, so we're planning on creating a one shot short film, and personally i've never been a fan of short films, perhaps it's due to the fact i haven't watched many. Nevertheless, I came across this short film, and despite the fact it's not shot in one shot i quite enjoyed it. I think a succesful short film needs to be carefully planned to keep the audience on their feet and interested, and you don't have long to do this in. In this case the comedy, realism and irony in this clip keeps us interested. Similar to a thriller short film were you have to keep the audience wanting to know more up until the climax. The problem we have ONE shot to entice the audience in, so I say if you can't move the camera, then you have to make sure theres LOADS of things going on in the shot, things that chance, things that move, new things. You can't have the viewers staring at the same thing for the duration of the film and expect them not to get bored. Anyways heres the clip...

Pixilation - Design Process

Taking into consideration the 4 elements of design processes i mentioned in my last post, here are the steps of my design process for my Pixilation peice.

Discovering
1. Introduction - we were introduced to the stop motion technique during the whiteboard animation task and then further the technique of pixilation which was similar but involved humans.
2. Research - We were shown video examples of pixilation to give us ideas and later went on to do our own research to find interesting examples. One of my most interesting examples so far was found on 'Watcher's Blog' which had posted a link to the music video of 'Her Morning Elegance' by Oren Lavie
3. Experimentation - we experimented the ideas we had in small groups during our seminars. Then further experimentation took place when i got home as I began to come up with ideas for a peice i was to produce.
4. Ideas - I had many ideas, but wanted to keep the peice simple yet effective.
5. Target Audience - urm...i guess well...Everyone.

Developing
6. i developed ideas i had by testing them out, finding out what worked best and how. For example should i throw my simba and try and catch it in a photo in mid air? or should i connect it by strings? did i want a blur? or would it look better clear?
7. during development i realised some of my ideas just wouldn't work, so i had to manipulate them or get rid of them.

Defining
8. THIS IS WHERE I WENT WRONG. Not enough defining of my developing peice caused the final animation to not run as smoothly as i would have hoped. Seperately it ran fine, but when i put the peices together it didn't make much sense.

Delivering
9. I posted my final peice on youtube, the sound was taken out. GREAT! After watching over my final peice i thought to myself it looked more like an experimentation video rather than I final peice. This is when I decided to make it exactly that. I plan on moving back to the defining stage, and keeping this peice as a prototype to base the final production on.

This is where your imagination is vital in creating a new interesting idea that hasn't been done before and in doing so, taking into consideration your target audience.

-Developing
From the ideas you discovered you need to select one and develop it further, go into depth and push your idea to it's limits. This involves planning and use of conecepts and prototypes.

-Defining
Further developement, smoothening the edges, compairing what you have to the plan of what you wanted to have and deciding whether you have achieved your goal, created something better, or something worse.

This is the first camera that can take 3d video and pictures. The video doesn't show much due to the fact that these 3D images would not be able to be seen through our home computers and laptops. I am interested to see what these pictures actually do look like. Do they look like the 3D images seen when we wear 3D glasses? is the picture coming out at you or does it look like you are looking through a window at an object?

The music has been removed due to possible copyright infringement. the song i used was 'the black rider' from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, It added a dark but comedic affect to my peice. There is no storyline to this, but more of an array of different ideas and short clips peiced together. I wanted to test out some ideas i had, and now i'm going to push these ideas to their limits in my piece i will be doing in my free time during the course of this week.

Multimedia - Whiteboard Animation

The class split into groups of 5, we were asked to create a simple animation using a stop start technique and editing the picture frame by frame to finally create a moving image. All we were given as a starter was a box and a house, and we had to get the box from one side of the house to the other. We began to plan the storyline of our soon to be Whiteboard masterpeice, then we decided it would create a much more interesting, creative and exciting storyline if we were to make things up as we went along. The possibilities were endless...as long as we could draw them! apart from the stickman in the jetpack, it would only confuse you to explain some of the other mishapen and deformed characters that featured in this animation, the sheer randomness would hopefully entertain the audiences as we didn't want an animation too predictable. The most detailed words could not paint a picture of our whiteboard world and you will have to see it for yourself...not that seeing it would in any way enlighten you, and would probably...most definetly leave you more confused. I'm definetly looking forward to viewing the final draft of our action packed 20 second blockbuster, and I loved taking part in the task.
